76th Annual Tony Awards | CBS

The Sinfonietta was honored to feature a number of opening soloists on the 2023 Tony Awards, which was created, arranged, and orchestrated by Sinfonietta founder Macy Schmidt.

Hosted by Ariana DeBose, the ceremony was entirely unscripted, with the innovative opening dance overture showcasing the power of storytelling through dance and music, as well as honoring the neighborhood of Washington Heights, home to this year’s Tony Awards venue the United Palace.

Featured instrumentalists provided by the Sinfonietta include Tia Fuller on saxophone, Julie Acosta on trumpet, and Négah Santos on congas.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse LIVE U.S. Tour

The Sinfonietta hits the road in the fall of 2023, playing major venues in cities all across the country, performing the film-with-orchestra spectacular Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse LIVE, with a score by Daniel Pemberton.

Carnegie Hall Presents: The Broadway Sinfonietta

In July 2022, the Sinfonietta made its live full orchestra debut, presented by Carnegie Hall Citywide, with its first original program, titled “Something To Say.”

Hosted by Sinfonietta founder Macy Schmidt and led by a rotation of all women guest conductors, the evening’s program featured special guest vocalists Solea Pfeiffer, Arielle Jacobs, Abigail Barlow, and more. Putting an orchestral spin on everything from indie pop to classic Broadway, The Broadway Sinfonietta commanded an audience of thousands, showing New York that they have Something To Say.

The Sinfonietta’s inaugural NYC-based orchestra, The Broadway Sinfonietta, debuted in October 2020 with Schmidt’s arrangement of “You’re Gonna Hear From Me,” to immense support and excitement from the Broadway community. After an exclusive premiere with CBS Sunday morning and over 100K cross-platform views, the orchestra went on to be featured in NBC, Rolling Stone, Forbes, BuzzFeed, TIME, TeenVogue, Elle Magazine, The Washington Post, The Today Show, and more.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse LIVE - World Premiere

On December 1st, 2023, The Hollywood Sinfonietta performed the world premiere of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse LIVE from the Academy Museum Theatre in Los Angeles. The evening featured a number of high-profile special guests, including the film's original creative team and Metro Boomin'. 

Cowboy Bebop LIVE - World Premiere & 25th Anniversary

Live from NYC’s Town Hall, The Broadway Sinfonietta performed the World Premiere of Cowboy Bebop, live to picture. Featuring surprise special guest Yoko Kanno, the show’s composer, the event was conducted by Macy Schmidt, and featured an 18-piece big band and a celebration of animé culture.

Forbes: International Women’s Day Gala at the Abu Dhabi Louvre

The Sinfonietta makes its Middle Eastern debut, represented by a chamber orchestra made up entirely of Arab women, personally organized by Sinfonietta founder Macy Schmidt. The group headlined Forbes’ Inaugural International Women’s Day Gala in March 2023 at the Abu Dhabi Louvre, joined by Dana Al Fardan, Qatar’s first female composer, on vocals. The performance honored award recipients Hillary Rodham Clinton, Gloria Steinem, Malala Yousafzai, Billie Jean King, and Ukranian First Lady Olena Zelenska.

365 Days of Girlhood: LIVE from the Rainbow Room

A year ago Monday, Dylan Mulvaney came out as a trans woman and began chronicling her journey on TikTok with her “Days of Girlhood” series. To celebrate her one-year anniversary, Mulvaney hosted “Dylan Mulvaney’s Day 365 Live!,” at the iconic Rainbow Room in New York, accompanied by the all-women and majority women-of-color orchestra The Broadway Sinfonietta, under the baton of conductor Macy Schmidt.

Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse LIVE In Concert

On Friday March 17th, 2023, The Broadway Sinfonietta performed the world premiere of Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse LIVE In Concert, alongside the film’s composer Daniel Pemberton. The event was presented at the King’s Theatre in Brooklyn, NY, produced by Senbla Concerts.

Museum Of Broadway

Sinfonietta founder Macy Schmidt was commissioned by the Museum of Broadway to create a custom arrangement, orchestration, and recording of “Give My Regards To Broadway” to be featured in a permanent exhibit which tells the history of Broadway through video and music. The recording features The Broadway Sinfonietta, recorded at Virtue and Vice Studios.

“It Starts With Me”

“It Starts With Me” was commissioned by the Sinfonietta for the 2021 Atlantic Festival, which addressed the theme “Visions of What America Could and Should Be,” and included speakers such as Hillary Rodham Clinton, Dr. Anthony Fauci, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Rosario Dawson, Hoda Kotb, Al Roker, and more.

Bloomingdale’s Holiday Partnership

Performed at Bloomingdale’s Give Happy 2021 Holiday Window Unveiling (headlined by Bebe Rhexa) at their Flagship New York City store with performances by Solea Pfeiffer, Desi Oakley and Kim Blanck.

RIDE: A New Musical

It’s 1895 and Annie Londonderry has returned victorious to America, hailed as the first woman ever to cycle around the world. She’s pioneering, she’s plucky, and she’s pitching her story to the men who run the newspapers. From the infamous wager that set her journey in motion, to her freewheeling adventures with captains, cowboys, and customs officials, Annie just knows her tales will spin readers into a frenzy. But as she approaches rough terrain, and unexpected paths throw her off balance, can Annie regain her footing, or will she confront the past she left behind? 

This award-winning new musical charts one woman's radical act and explores the lies we tell to escape ourselves. RIDE had its first full production at London’s Charing Cross Theatre in August 2022, featuring a recorded score by the 14-piece Broadway Sinfonietta.

The Walk, honoring Little Amal

Little Amal Walks NYC is a co-production between The Walk Productions and St. Ann’s Warehouse in association with Handspring Puppet Company.  Between 14 September – 2 October 2022 Amal was welcomed at 55 events across the five boroughs of New York City.

As part of Little Amal’s Walk Across New York City, The Broadway Sinfonietta welcomed the puppet and honored the 9/11 Families for a Peaceful Tomorrow, performing Macy Schmidt’s string quartet arrangements of “Bring Him Home” from Les Mis, “You’ll Never Walk Alone” from Carousel, and Sara Bareilles’s “Safe Place to Land,” sung by Kim Blanck.

Ratatouille: The TikTok Musical

The global phenomenon starring Tituss Burgess, Andrew Barth Feldman, Ashley Park, Adam Lambert, Wayne Brady, Kevin Chamberlain and Mary Testa raised over $2 million for The Actors Fund. With orchestrations by Macy Schmidt, The Broadway Sinfonietta served as the production’s orchestra.

Second Stage Theatre Annual Gala

The event took place November 15th, 2021 at Pier Sixty, honoring Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Lynn Nottage and producer Debra Martin Chase, and featuring special guests Brandy, Jordin Sparks, Lady A’s Hillary Scott, and The Broadway Sinfonietta.

For You, Paige: The TikTok Musical

TikTok takes the digital musical theatre phenomenon a step further by commissioning its first official TikTok musical.

The story of For You, Paige (with a book co-written by Daniel Mertzlufft and Kate Leonard) centers on teen friends Landon and Paige, whose friendship is tested when a musical theatre song Landon writes—based on Paige's idea that her favorite dystopian YA novel Utopia would be a great musicalgoes viral, but only Landon is approached by a producer to write the whole musical. The production’s cast featured Roman Banks, Sri Ramesh, Krystina Alabado, JJ Nieman, and more.

The score was recorded by The Broadway Sinfonietta, the acclaimed all-women and majority women of color orchestra founded by For You, Paige orchestrator Macy Schmidt.

Laura Bell Bundy’s Women of Tomorrow

Benefitting the Women of Tomorrow Foundation & National Women’s History Museum, Laura Bell Bundy, joined by The Broadway Sinfonietta, performed her album release show at Green Room 42 on March 20th, 2022.

Ars Nova’s Nova Ball

On February 7, 2022, at Capitale NYC, Ars Nova held their annual Nova Ball honoring Antoinette Nwandu and Steven Levenson, featuring special guests Robin de Jesus, Larry 0wens, and more, backed by The Broadway Sinfonietta.

Atlantic Theater Company Annual Gala

The event took place Monday, May 9th at the Loeb Boathouse in Central Park, featuring special guests Lea Michele, Ari’el Satchel, LaChanze, Victoria Clark, and Bebe Neuwirth, with The Broadway Sinfonietta as the evening’s house band.

The Drama League Annual Gala

The Drama League’s annual Benefit Gala, Embrace the Season: A Drama League Gala Celebration, took place at City Winery New York on Monday, October 17, 2022.

Guests enjoyed a sunset cocktail reception, followed by an elegant three-course dinner and live show-stopping performances and appearances from the upcoming Broadway season, including Back to the Future, Bliss, Death of a Salesman, KPOP, The Karate Kid, The Piano Lesson, A Man of No Importance, and more, featuring Music Supervision by Macy Schmidt and The Broadway Sinfonietta as the evening’s house band.

“The Light Effect,” by Desi Oakley

THE LIGHT EFFECT is about a young woman in New York City whose life changes when she discovers that she has a superpower to see individuals who are silently experiencing suicidal ideation. In the process, she illuminates their unique worth by reminding them that they're enough. A portion of the concert proceeds supported the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.

The show featured all original songs, composed by Desi Oakley and performed by The Broadway Sinfonietta.
